An accessible, safe and efficient way to move through the city.. Yes? A bit far fetched though.

Walkway, Mobility City

Spring 2015, Glasgow School of Art

My big idea for a mode of public transport that will improve the experience of people with disabilities, that will, in turn, improve the experience for everyone is the ASE Walkway – the accessible, safe and efficient way to move around the city.

I wanted to provide everyone with the chance to move independently (all of the people in a wheelchair I saw were aided by someone) and explore the city. That’s why my walkway is raised and fully transparent – so that you can better blend with the urban surroundings.

It consists of two levels, both accessible by wide and fast lifts. The lower level has two one-way cycling lanes accordingly designated with a walking/running lane in between. The middle lane has pavegen tiles, which is a new technology creating energy from footsteps. The upper level has two modern, wide and fast moving walkway appropriate for a big pool of users (various disabilities, parents with double prams, wide enough for luggage, wheelchairs) with a walking lane in between with integrated tactile pavement, for everyone that doesn’t feel like walking past flying bikes at the level below.

Other than producing its own energy the project is universal – it is designed to be modular, making it scalable for any city in the world. It uses a helical truss form for its structure, which is very light but stiff and aesthetically pleasing form of construction, which is pre-fabricated off-site limiting the amount of work that actually took place on site, making it easy to install.

It was one of the first times we had to produce "nice" design process journals, so you can see my workings below. Under it is some posterlike pages I created for the spoken presentation.
