Roasted crickets vending machine
2016/2017 Uni of Glasgow, Master Thesis
The Final Year Project, equivalent to a Master Thesis, is a self nominated project. On the first day of the yea every aspiring graduate has to present three project ideas - they could be problems to solve or direct product ideas. In the Process Design Journal (the biggest, very messy, document, trying to gather all of our work) you can see that one of my proposals was to keep on working on AumStone, since it was a promising project, the other one was designing a kettle to solve personal issues with making tea.. and then I was struggling to come up with a 3rd idea to present.
I wanted to do something related with food and cooking, at the same time something meaningful and potentially memorable. All of a sudden all pieces came together for a Food of Future project, concentrating on Entomophagy - eating insects. One big issue - I had a really bad phobia of these guys. I decided to embark on the challenge which turned out to be a pretty successful one.
I strongly recommend going through this page, where I have compiled overcoming my fear and my farming of crickets... and eating them.
At the end, I ended up with a big cricket producing, processing and vending machine.
In order to see my process and results summarised, I suggest you flick through this Project Summary (pdf), I had to compile This as an online magazine version.
To graduate as Masters of Engineering, we had to demonstrate we have the necessary knowledge, by producing a Technical Report (pdf) on our project, with corresponding calculations. Online magazine.
The poster I created for my product.
This is, again, the big messy document, containing almost all work for this project. Online.
