The ultimate breadbox

Ooop, ready!

Subject called Design in Wood. We could build anything we want as long as it ties to the Nordic identity and we understand timer's properties and respect them.

We really wanted to incorporate burnt timber and its mould-resistent properties, together with something Scandinavians like. And then it came to mus - they love bread! And most of them make their own.

So from very early on, my partner and I, decided that we want to facilitate peoples' mornings by enabling them to do make their breakfast almost single handed. Our goal was to create a simple mechanism that brings the bread forward when the lid is open.

I have around a billion of pages like this one in my sketchbook, but I'm not gonna bother you with them:

Now I'm just going to fast-forward the process showing you some of our mechanism trials.

Trying out some lever mechanisms using CAD and some laser-cut cardboard and plywood.

Here we tried a completely different idea, which was much simpler but required more space and wasn't as user friendly as we wanted the final one to be. We kept the idea of using a knife to open it though.

And then we come up with this! And decided it is good enough, and that probably cannot get much simpler.

There were a lot of iterations before we arrived at the final design. I just wanted to do more with the wood. And learn more. So I incorporated quite a lot of woodworking techniques in the idea I drew at 3am one night.

This is the final design rendered in Solidworks.

And then it came to building it. No one believed it would work :D

The top part had to be laminated and curved. It wasn't very easy. Nor was drilling holes in the "home-made" lamination.

It started looking like something and then it had to be charred since it is a really important part of the idea. And who doesn't love playing with fire? :)

Ooop, ready!
